Etch Express displays measurements in inches by default and can switch to millimeters at any time.
Switching units
The unit toggle sits in the Plate Editor. Switching it changes how every dimension is displayed without altering the design itself, so a plate measured at 4 inches is the same plate when shown as 101.6 mm.
How values are stored
All dimensions are stored internally in millimeters, using the exact conversion of 1 inch to 25.4 mm. Displayed values are converted for the chosen unit, which means a value typed in inches is preserved precisely rather than rounded.
Border widths
Border presets are described by hairline, the thinnest line most laser engravers reproduce reliably.
Preset | Inches | Millimeters |
Hairline | 0.003 | 0.0762 |
2x Hairline | 0.006 | 0.1524 |
3x Hairline | 0.009 | 0.2286 |
A custom width can be set where a specific value is required.
Setting defaults
Default plate and bed dimensions are set per store in Store Settings, under Plate Settings and Bed Settings. New designs inherit those defaults, which saves re-entering the same material size for every job.
